Is it common practice for auto body shops to hold your car for full payment from another insurance company?
Filed Under Maintenance & Repairs | 3 Comments
I was rear-ended and had to get my bumper replaced. I took it to the shop, with the insurance check in hand (roughly $1000). As the shop then dealt with the lousy driver’s insurance company, they agreed a supplemental charge would be necessary (roughly $200). Now, the work is done, but they won’t release my car until the additional $200 payment is received from the insurance company. Is this acceptable?
They claim this is company policy, but i don’t see how holding my car will ensure they get payment from an insurance company i have no affiliation with. This insurance company assures us that the check is in the mail, and I have no reason to doubt it, since they have been great to work with thus far. So it seems to me all this policy is doing is passing the risk of doing business from the business to the customer. Thanks…
Thanks for the input guys…
I ended up paying the 200 myself since i needed my car this weekend, and trust that the autobody shop will refund me when they receive the check from the other driver’s insurance. I’ve actually been very impressed with the insurance company (never thought i’d say that), and they have since provided a fedex tracking number and a faxed copy of the check. So i am cautiously optimistic, despite the feeling of being used as a risk-mitigator for this supposedly reputable (dealer) body shop.
Choosing Jorge’s answer because it’s not *my* insurance company, and it seems to me that this particular risk of being burned is inherent to their business, and they should have better methods to protect against it than just exposing the customer to it.
Thanks.

landlord asks me to take his car to the shop, he tells me he has insurance but lied and i had an accident?
Filed Under Insurance & Registration | 12 Comments
I proceeded through a yellow light and was turning left, when a semi tried to beat the light also. the semi was going straight so i was ticketed for failure to give right of way. I am shaken up but physically ok. No one was hurt. Since my landlord did not have insurance on his vehicle and i was at fault, i am responsible for about 15 thousand dollars in damage. I truly believed he had insurance, he is my landlord, and we share a house. I felt obligated to take his car for him because of his health he has a hard time getting around. Please tell me if I can hold him responsible for not having insurance. THIS ALL HAPPENED ON 12/11 AND I GO TO COURT ON THE 28TH PLEASE HURRY YOUR ANSWERS
I do have my own car and as a matter of fact we were using it as the chase vehicle because his car was going to be left there. I use his car only when running errands for him, and that is because gas is expensive. I am trying to blame someone but only because that car would not have been on the road with me driving if it was not insured. Please understand that I am self employed, and have three children, I am not a careless driver and I was not solely responsible for this accident. I have never had a ticket nor any infraction on my driving record.

What happens when your car is totaled and your insurance does not cover damage to it?
Filed Under Insurance & Registration | 6 Comments
We got into an accident out of town and the car was totaled. The insurance policy only covers damage done to other cars. The car is still in the shop. Do we sell the parts to the shop? Take it to the junkyard? Any help would be appreciated.

I think the repair shop I took my car to charge me and my insurance company for things they did not do?

I was recently in an accident and had to have my car repaired. I took my car to a local body shop down the street from were I work. I am happy with the work, however, my bill shows items that I do not believe to have been done. They put down that they replaced the hood hinges but they did not. They said they straighten the frame, but I stopped by one day and spoke with one of the techs who said nothing was wrong with the frame. I still owe them some money but my insurance company paid them also. What do you think I should do.

Will New York State pay my car insurance deductible if I hit a deer?
Filed Under Insurance & Registration | 7 Comments
I recently had a deer hit my car and am going to have to pay a $500 deductible. My grandpa told my parents that when he hit a deer, New York State paid for all repairs including the deductible because deer are considered to be property of the state. His body shop took care of all the details. Does anyone know is this is still true or who I can contact to find out more information?

Is it typical for a body shop to give me money back for letting them work on my car if insurance is paying?
Filed Under Insurance & Registration | 7 Comments
My parked car got hit and other party took responsibility. I want to get it fixed. If I pay for it body shops charge $3k. If insurance pays for it the body shops will “milk” the insurance company and charge around $5k, that’s fine with me. But, I’d like a piece of the action. Do body shops usually do this if asked?

I need to find car insurance in a few days.. I’m with progressive now and they just doubled it. I had a few tickets since then and i always just got a dui DROPPED.. I am suspecting even though it was dropped that still has something to do with it.. But anyhow, the real question here is.. I am applying for quotes now and they ask “Amount paid out for property damage ” from an accident two years ago I was at fault in.. I have no idea.. I was wondering if anybody could tell me how to go about finding this out. Thanks.
